The “super maman” cocktail by Frederic Viaud

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Lately I have published a few traditional children cocktail recipes (diabolo grenadine and bébé au lait) but it shouldn’t be all about the children, should it? I share the common belief that a happy mum raises happy children and as such mums should have their little cocktails too ;-) the “super maman” cocktail.

It just so happens that my husband and I love to go for cocktails during our date nights and that we have recently met a really talented French barman, Frederic Viaud. He served us delicious cocktails for our friend’s birthday party. I then asked him if he wouldn’t mind sharing with me his version of the “super maman” cocktail, which he did!

Enjoy (of course in moderation) you deserve it super maman ;-)

  • 1 celery bunch
  • 50 millilitres fresh water
  • Caster sugar

Super maman cocktail

  • 20 millilitres homemade celery cordial
  • 15 millilitres lemon juice + a slice to rim your glass
  • 20 millilitres egg white
  • 40 millilitres of your favourite gin
  • Salt

Instructions

Celery Cordial

  1. Rince and dice apple and celery (discard leaves and core)
  2. Put diced apple, celery and water in the mixer and strain out the maximum of juice possible
  3. Add sugar to the juice (in a 1 to 1 proportion)
  4. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved

Supermaman cocktail

  1. Rim a Martini glass: rub a slice of lemon on the rim of the glass and dip it into table salt.
  2. Pour all ingredients in your shaker, close it and give it a vigourous shake (without any ice), the egg white should start an emulsion (foaming up)
  3. Repeat this with your shaker filled up with cubed ice, until condensation appears on the shaker.
  4. Strain into a Martini glass

If you want to learn more from this great barman, Frederic has just published A First Understanding of Mixology: Handbook, which has been written with first time cocktail makers in mind as much as for people who want to improve their cocktail making skills. All the beautiful illustrations from the book have been made by Jennifer Kirkham.

    Wow, celery in a cocktail isn’t something I’ve heard of before! I do love apple cocktails though so this sounds really tasty.

    What a unique sounding cocktail, Helene! I am a big lover of celery flavour but I have never thought of it in a cocktail. Sounds refreshing and decadent. Pinning to try!

    Love, love, love! Cocktails are such a treat, aren’t they? I can’t remember the last time I actually had one. I had a couple last week actually but before that, the previous one must have been 5 or 6 years ago (whaaaat?). x

    That book sounds really good, I’d really like to learn more about cocktails but haven’t really got a clue where to start! I’ve never heard of celery cordial before, it sounds refreshing, what sort of other things would you use it for?

      I would personally try with sparkling water for an original mocktail but will ask Frederic for more ideas ;-)

      Hi Charlotte! I have an answer from Frederic for you as well ;-)
      “If you like to learn more about cocktails the book can be a good support to help you get started and be creative.
      Now let’s have a closer look to the Super Maman cocktail;
      the celery cordial is combined with lemon juice, egg white and gin, here the celery replace the Triple sec liquor used for the classic “white Lady”.
      Imagine you favourite cocktail and replace its sugar source with your celery cordial;
      Celery Margarita, celery Mojito, celery gin fizz, celery cosmopolitan..etc..
      You can also use it to made a lemonade, everyone love a good homemade lemonade or simply add a dash into your daily water (Prosecco) to add extra flavour.
      The limit is your imagination, I hope this will help, enjoy :))”
